Summary:

Microelectrode arrays (MEA) were used to study the long-term effects of light-induced gating of neuronal network activity.  Primary rat hippocampal neurons were exposed to photostimulation protocols while being recorded on an MEA.  This model showed adaptive responses in the same neuronal network to distinct optical stimulation frequencies applied over different temporal windows.
